Musical "Next To Normal" Spreading Awareness of Mental Illness In Korea

"Next To Normal," the groundbreaking musical that won numerous awards after being released in 2009, has finally come to Korea. The musical's main character suffers from bipolar disorder, and the musical is expected to raise awareness of societal problems related to mental illness in Korea.

The musical has been described as: "a powerful rock musical that grapples with mental illness in a suburban family and expands the scope of subject matter for musicals."

The musical was written from 2002-2008, which resulted in the main character, Diana, being diagnosed with “bipolar depressive with delusional episodes,” a diagnosis that would be invalid today due to recent advances in the mental health field. Diana's husband, Dan, has depression, which he struggles to cope with. Their daughter is an overachiever who struggles with anxiety.

Other themes in the production include suicide, drug abuse and ethics in psychiatry.

The musical consists of 2 acts and contains nearly 40 original music numbers, which have been converted to Korean. During it's original run, "Next To Normal" won numerous awards, including the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and 3 Tony Awards.

The musical will be performed from December 13th, 2015 to March 3rd, 2016 at Yongkang Hall in the Doosan Art Center. (Location)
